INFO: The band was founded in Moscow in August 1996 by guitarist Igor Polyakov and former
vocalist Sergey Bendrikov. From the start CATHARSIS worked in melodic doom-metal style in
the vein of early AMORPHIS and CREMATORY. The first band's demo-tape, "Child of the
Flowers", was recorded at 1997 and got positive reviews. Later this demo was re-recorded
and released through HOBGOBLIN Records in MC format under the title "Proles Florum" (now
completely sold out). The band gave lots of gigs and achieved the statute of one of the
leading bands of the genre. Two songs were featured in "Russian Metal Ballads, Vol.III"
and "Iron March, Vol.V" compilations. A video to one of the songs was filmed and included
in "Ritual III" videocompilation.
CATHARSIS never stops in its development and it outcame the patterns of doom-metal. In
1998-1999 the new program saw the light. It was more in neoclassic/progressive/heavy
style. A part of this program entitled "Febris Erotica" was released as CD, digipack CD
(Isolated Records) and MC (Hobgoblin Records). This work received most positive reviews in
the majority of Russian music magazines. CATHARSIS was estimated as one of the leading
Russian metal bands. According to the readers of ROCK CITY magazine the band was named the
best newcomer of 1999 and "Febris Erotica" one of the best Russian metal releases (only
three months after it had hit the shelves). At the moment this CD is nearly sold out and
it will be possibly re-released.
The recent work of CATHARSIS, "Dea" is even more eclectic and more inclined to the
classics. This album is the logical continuation of the previous CD. The new CD features
the vocalist Oleg Zhilyakov - the last acquirement of the band. "Dea" appeared on March,
16 2001 in CD format. It was released by Russian label IROND Records. MC will follow in
- The third album of the leading Russian neo-classical power/progressive metal band
- Superb production and sound quality (album was recorded in famous "SNC Studio"
(legendary Soviet hard-rockers Gorky Park recorded their albums there))
- Their previous album got excellent reactions from Metal press and fans
- CATHARSIS was acclaimed as a best newcomer of 1999 year!
- "Irond Records Ltd" is the leading Russian metal label who has exclusive license
agreements for Russia and ex-USSR countries with Nuclear Blast, Avantgarde Music, Last
Episode, Napalm Records, Prophecy Productions, Black Mark and few others.
